Good attendance and punctuality are fundamental in giving children the best possible start in life. Children are expected to be at school at 8.35am in EYFS and KS1 for an 8.45am start, and doors open for KS2 pupils at 8.40am. If your child is ill, please call the school number on 0114-248-2825 and press the option for reporting absence.
Family holidays are discouraged, and parents who take their child on an unauthorised family holiday may be subject to a fixed penalty notice from the Local Authority. Please read our Attendance Policy in the policies area of this website for further information. Parental responsibility and the law on this can be found in the document below.
Attendance at St Giles is generally in line with the national average, and the school sets targets for attendance which exceed this. Rewards are given to children with good attendance levels, or improved attendance. Class rewards are also given where attendance is at least 98% for the week (roughly no more than 3 days' absence in total for the class). Please see our rewards system, with a range of incentives that increase with sustained improvement/good rates of attendance, by clinking the link at the bottom of this page.
We also encourage and expect good punctuality so that children are in school on time and ready to learn. Rewards are attached to this, with Early Bird Lucky Dip prizes given out on randomly chosen days every two weeks (see poster below).
Families where attendance or punctuality is a cause for concern are supported by our Inclusion Mentor (Rhea Hollis) and/or the Education Welfare Service. In particular, where families are close to or below 90% attendance, letters are sent out, meetings may be held and support can be arranged; attendance below 90% is classed as 'Persistent Absenteeism' (PA), which is equivalent to missing one day every two weeks in school; this would not be tolerated in the workplace, and means that valuable learning time is being lost. Reducing PA rates is the key to ensuring good attendance overall, so the school takes a robust approach in this area.
The Attendance Rewards below were agreed in consultation with the School Council in January 2019:
